Everyone needs at least one frameback razor, and here is one for you! Erik Anton Berg was a maker from Ekulstina, Sweden. They made a huge selection of razors as the company had a reputation to make any tool their customers wanted if ordered in a quantity larger than 25. This razor has a few date marks on it from the late 1800's and stamps all over the spine and tang, we are digging it big time!
This razor weighs 39 grams and has a spine thickness of 5 mm, blade height of 16 mm, or around 5/8 that delivers a bevel angle of almost 18 degrees. The thin blade gives one the impression that this is going to be a very close shave, but the geometry tells the true story, it shaves more like a typical, more solid near wedge, but lighter in hand, more like a full hollow of this size. The bevel looks great on the one side and runs slighly up on the other, quite weird as fixed blades normally invert such irregularities to the opposite side, so one would expect to see the toe and heel with a slighly higher bevel on the opposite side. That being said, it will be easy to maintain in exactly this way by adding one layer of tape to te spine when the time comes for a refresh on a slab of stone.
The razor is shave ready and easy to hone and strop, the scales are a bit loose for the first 45 degrees of opening, but perfectly firm when stropping and shaving. The razor is all original making it a cool piece to own and slash with.
*Vintage razors are priced according to model and availability, time spent cleaning and reconditioning and time/level of honing. Please enquire if you need additional work done to this razor prior to purchase. All straight razors will require a stropping on a leather strop before every use. Pics are unedited (detail) and provide a true image of the condition of the razor.
