Dubl Duck is a brand of razor that was distributed from New York, there seems to be a lot of information missing on this maker, and it is speculated that the razor brand had various suppliers for their blanks, and it would also seem steel from different sources around the globe. This Pearlduck is stamped 'Soligen, Germany', so at least it's origen is known. Mystery aside, they are well known and much loved by straight razor users, and are quite hard to come by. They would fall under the top 10 brands of vintage razors for most of us. I have not been able to find a similar razor with aluminium scales, so I am not sure whether these are original or not, regardless they are a few years old, and it is quite a unique piece in many ways.
The razor has some age spots/marks on the blade and scales, but it remains a very clean razor, it took a very thin, even bevel, so one can tell this razor has not worked a lot at all, it is quick and easy to sharpen up on a fine stone with one layer of tape to protect the well preserved spine.
The razor weighs 34 grams and has a square point on its full hollow grind, the blade and scales functions properly when opened and closed, and it centers nicely. The spine is 4 mm thick and has a height of 17 mm or 5.8 ths, delivering a cutting angle of 13.5 degrees. Using a 4k, 8k, 13k progression it gave a good shave, but I suppose I expected more being the first DD I tried and the popularity of it, maybe a few laps on a Zulu Grey is what is needed to wow me away, if it sits for a while we will try a few more progressions, but for now it shaves comfortably and we'll leave it up to the new owner to find the magic within the steel.
The razor is shave ready and can be used right away, regular stropping will be required after the first shave.
*Vintage razors are priced according to model and availability, time spent cleaning and reconditioning and time/level of honing. Please enquire if you need additional work done to this razor prior to purchase. All straight razors will require a stropping on a leather strop before every use. Pics are unedited (detail) and provide a true image of the condition of the razor.
