The Claus company was founded as Elyria shear works in 1877 by John and Henrie Clauss in Elyria, Ohio. At one time the company was the largest global manufacturer of scissors and shears. The two brothers John and Henrie Clauss, of German origan started Elyria Shear Works from a one-room building in Elyria, Ohio. Together with five employees, they began manufacturing scissors, shears, straight razors and serrated kitchen knifes. The company has a rich history, and is one of the few that remains standing untill this day, as far as I can tell they stopped producing razors around the time of the second world war.

This razor an ugly duckling for sure, square and boxy with no features that really sets it apart, it is fairly light at 36 grams as it has quite a thin blade (spine 4.5 mm), the blade height is set at 13 mm or 1/2" It has some spine wear and the blade has some contamination that will take a lot of elbow grease to rectify, the bevel is uneven but it honed up easily using one layer of tape on the spine. The scales are not perfect, but they have no cracks or breaks and are functional.

The razor strops easily on a paddle and hanging strop. The shave was great considering the sharp, square toe and heel, I used the middle part for the shave and do not need those pointy edges for detailing, take your time to learn how to drive this one if you want to get full use out of it

*Vintage razors are priced according to model and availability, time spent cleaning and reconditioning and time/level of honing. Please enquire if you need additional work done to this razor prior to purchase. All straight razors will require a stropping on a leather strop before every use. Pics are unedited (detail) and provide a true image of the condition of the razor.
